Armed Forces Friendly School
St Illtyd Primary School is proud to have 26 Service Children, whose experiences are an important part of our school community. We listen to our Service Children because their views help us understand their needs, recognise their strengths and provide the right support.
SSCE Cymru supports our school to understand and respond to the experiences of Service Children. Working with SSCE Cymru helps St Illtyd’s develop inclusive approaches, listen to learners and share effective ideas that support wellbeing, belonging and positive relationships. To date, we have received £1,000 in funding, which has supported confidence, communication, wellbeing and friendship, including the creation of a sensory garden.
Using Toolkit 8, provided by SSCE Cymru, we created a one-page profile for each learner and balanced outdoor and indoor activities. Children engaged with nature, collaborated on personal storybooks and shared their experiences, developing creativity, teamwork, communication, resilience and confidence. Mr Elvin, our Service Children School Champion, and Mrs Fellows, our Wellbeing Officer, guided and motivated learners.
Learners helped lead celebrations of The Month of the Military Child in April, Armed Forces Day in June and Remembrance Day in November. We reviewed our learning with pupils, staff and families and will continue successful club sessions. We were awarded our Armed Forces Friendly Schools Cymru bronze status.
